5 Simple Ways to Get Your Mind Right

5 Simple Ways to Get Your Mind Right

When your mind isn’t right, it can ruin your whole day, week, or sometimes even longer. The key to getting your mind right is making yourself a priority. It’s not being selfish; it is an important part of your self-care regimen. The definition of getting your mind right is to be in control of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. These 5 quick and easy tips will equip you with the knowledge you need to get your mind right.

1. Focus on your needs

Putting yourself first reminds you that you're just as significant as everyone else. All too often we get caught up in making sure others are taken care of before ourselves. Over time this can lead to expectations feeling more like requirements. If someone else is capable of doing things themselves, let them. It’s important to appreciate your wants and needs too.

2. Pause for the cause

Take a break from news propaganda and social media platforms. Excessive exposure to photoshopped models, one-sided news reports, and famous icons can damage your self-esteem and make you feel inadequate. Get out of the house and go someplace you haven’t been. Try new hobbies or crafts. Sing your favorite songs out loud. Act silly out in public. Discover things that are fun and make you happy.

3. Live now

Be mindful of what’s occurring in your present life. Looking back on your past can make you feel resentful and powerless. Overemphasizing the future can cause anxiety, and lack of fulfillment, and make you feel overwhelmed. The time to live your life is right here, right now!

4. Give your mind a break

When you find yourself overthinking, this simple mindfulness technique gives your mind a much-needed break. All you have to do is take notice of the things around you. Describe the color, shape, and size of the objects you’re looking at. For example: “I see a stop sign, it’s shaped like an octagon, and it is also red and white”. You can use this method to redirect your thoughts no matter where you are. I will go into further detail about this mindfulness skill in my future blog posts.

5. Reach out to someone

Ask your loved ones to describe some of the things they like about you. This is an awesome confidence booster that shows you more positive attributes to focus on. Reaching out to a professional can change your life in amazing ways. Skilled psychologists and therapists are experts at helping you feel better about yourself. Joining various online communities with members who share similarities with you is a comforting inspiration. Google and YouTube are also great ways of discovering gratitude and mindfulness skills that work best for you.
